The woman who lost a husband and two sons in a shooting last year that ignited outrage over San Francisco’s immigration policies filed suit (.pdf) today against the city in superior court. Danielle Bologna is asking for unspecified damages and an injunction against San Francisco for the deaths of her husband, Anthony, and two of her sons, Michael and Matthew.
The three were driving through the city’s southern Excelsior district on June 22 when they were struck by gunfire from a passing car. Edwin Ramos, who authorities say is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador and member of the violent Mara Salvatrucha street gang, has been charged with their murders. The suit claims that San Francisco’s “sanctuary” policies, which prevent local officials from enforcing federal immigration laws, are responsible for the Bolognas’ wrongful deaths.
The Bologna killings appeared to add fuel to a federal effort against Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, that ultimately resulted in a sweeping indictment.
The complaint, Danielle Bologna v. City and County of San Francisco, CGC-09-486928, also names as individual defendants Mayor Gavin Newsom, Police Chief Heather Fong, and Juvenile Probation Chief William Sifferman.
