With pernicious rumors swirling about mergers, layoffs or worse at the troubled firm, Chairman Matt Larrabee took the opportunity to tell everyone not to believe everything you read in the paper or hear in the hallway, according to the kind of people who tell us the stuff we put in the paper.
Staff was reassured that there wouldn’t be any layoffs. The meetings had been much anticipated, some believing that a merger would be announced, but alas it was only to say sit tight, don’t fret, and don’t read those sniping, mendacious blogs, ahem…

Since there's not much fact reported here, perhaps ignoring sniping blogs is the right idea.

Well this is funny. Did he mean - 'don't fret, we won't have any MORE layoffs?' By my count, they've let go of or lost 150-200 staff/attorneys in the last 15 months. Pleading, or reassurance?
