The Republican Party may be in danger of losing power in Washington, but Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher isn't taking it lying down. GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani announced his Justice Advisory Committee today, and four of its 19 members hail from the L.A.-based legal giant.
Chairing the committee is Gibson partner Theodore Olson, former solicitor general in the George W. Bush administration and lead advocate for the Bush campaign in Bush v. Gore. Also on the committee are Gibson partners Miguel Estrada, Douglas Cox and Randy Mastro.
Estrada is a former assistant SG in the Clinton administration and also a member of the Bush v. Gore team. Bush nominated Estrada to the D.C. Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in 2001 but the nomination was blocked by the Democrats.
Cox also worked on Bush v. Gore — or, as Cox's official bio on Gibson, Dunn's Web site describes it, "the firm's successful representation of the prevailing candidate before the Supreme Court of the United States in litigation stemming from the disputed ballot count in Florida during the 2000 presidential election."
Mastro is a former deputy mayor under Giuliani. According to his bio, he was next in line to act for New York in Giuliani's absence.
Olson and Cox worked alongside Giuliani in Ronald Reagan's Office of Legal Counsel. Mastro worked under Giuliani in the U.S. attorney's office.
