Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Mary Schroeder has seen a lot of changes in the last three decades. The court has become more diverse and the circuit has taken on some of the county's most important social issues.
That makes Schroeder proud.
But there have also been shifts that give her pause. Chief among them is the slow pace of circuit judicial appointments and what she sees as the lack of diversity in the legal backgrounds of nominees to the federal bench.
Schroeder, the longest serving active judge on the circuit, sat down with the Recorder on Wednesday during the court's annual conference to share her thoughts about appointments. And she talked about her desire to work on women's issues -- her "first love" -- when she takes senior status at the end of the year.
