The lab tech at the heart of the S.F. crime-lab mess won't face criminal charges over her admitted theft of cocaine, according to the Bay City News Service. Deborah Madden, 60, still faces a felony cocaine charge in San Mateo County, but a spokesman for the attorney general's office -- which assumed responsibility for investigating the alleged lab thefts because San Francisco prosecutors were potential witnesses -- said there wasn't sufficient evidence to charge her with stealing drug evidence.
S.F. police chief George Gascon told Bay City News he thought they had a good case, though he acknowledged it would have largely been based on her admissions to investigators.
Madden was represented by S.F. defense attorney Paul DeMeester.
