The crowd gathers outside City Hall in San Francisco Thursday in anticipation, with some gay and lesbian couples hoping that Chief Judge Vaughn Walker would lift the stay, clearing the way for immediate marriages.
Pacifica residents Sarah Shuchter and partner April Williamson were among those checking their phones for updates on Walker's decision as they waited in line for a marriage license.

San Ramon residents Kathleen Cowen, left, and Christine Rhodes filled out a marriage license application Thursday.
Shortly after noon Thursday, word that the stay had been lifted spread through the line, causing whoops of joy.
After a few confusing minutes, those gathered at City Hall Thursday learned they'd have to wait at least another six days before being allowed to wed.
