Just before his confirmation hearing Thursday in San Francisco, attorney Mona Lisa Wallace, president of the San Francisco chapter of the National Organization for Women, was handing out a letter from California NOW strongly opposing the former state senator’s nomination to Fresno’s Fifth District Court of Appeal.
“Mr. Poochigian’s long political history,” the letter by California NOW President Patricia Bellasalma said, “of being vehemently opposed to the rights of women, the LGBT community, workers and people of color in addition to having no credible legal experience qualifying him for the bench, as determined by the California State Bar, amplifies this travesty.”
More amplification after the jump
NOW was especially ticked off that the 60-year-old Poochigian was joining a court that’s currently 88 percent white and 78 percent male.
“Placing Mr. Poochigian, a wholly unqualified white male candidate in this position,” the letter stated, “flies in the face of credulity and reduces the judicial appointment process to pure political patronage at its worst.”
