With all this talk of a Democrat running for attorney general, a prominent Republican wanted to remind us that the GOP will be fielding candidates for the state’s Top Cop position, too.
George “Duf” Sundheim, the former chairman of the California Republican Party, says the list of potential AG challengers includes a lot of DAs: Jan Scully of Sacramento, Bonnie Dumanis of San Diego and Rod Pacheco of Riverside. McGregor Scott, the outgoing U.S. attorney for California’s Eastern District, and former state Sen. Chuck Poochigian (the GOP’s 2006 candidate for AG) may also run, Sundheim said.
Bonus potshot at Kamala Harris, after the jump:
Now, almost every one of those recruits has said publicly that they’re not interested in the AG’s job, that they’re committed to their current jobs, yadda, yadda, yadda. That’s to be expected, Sundheim said.
“They’re going to keep saying no until somebody lays out a plan — who’s going to be at the top of the ticket and things like that,” Sundheim said. Other “things” to consider are a) is Jerry Brown really going to run for governor, and b) can I really raise enough money to compete with (fill in the blank).
Either way, nobody’s quaking in their boots over Kamala Harris running, Sundheim said. “With her views on the death penalty and her lack of leadership on the law enforcement stuff, including the sanctuary for illegal immigrants, I think there are some real leadership issues there.”
