Gay-Marriage Lawyer Ties Knot

Six months after Chief Deputy City Attorney Therese Stewart made her arguments about gay marriage to the Supreme Court, she finally got to make it personal.

About 150 people gathered to see Stewart and her partner of 16 years, solo practitioner Carole Scagnetti, exchange vows on Friday’s sun-baked afternoon.

Decked out in pants suits (Stewart in tan, Scagnetti in charcoal), the two took the stroll down the aisle in City Hall’s South Light Court, arms linked with their daughter Natasha Payes, who walked  between them. (Payes, a junior in college now, told LegalPad after the ceremony that the two were her guardians from the time she was in the 8th grade until she was 18).

Performing the ceremony was Judge William Cahill, who welcomed everyone to Stewart and Scagnetti’s “second marriage” (to each other — the two lawyers had married in a private backyard ceremony in 1995).

How did they first meet? Stewart had hired Scagnetti to be her lawyer, Cahill said to mirthful laughter from the audience. She helped Stewart settle a previous relationship.

Sipping on a glass of white wine after the ceremony, Stewart said, “It feels like I can finally let my hair down and have it be personal.”

There will be a honeymoon in September, Stewart said, when the two sneak off to Sea Ranch beach to “mellow out,” and another week off together at home.

let’s be honest about those commercials here. When were you ever taught about marriage in school? Those commercials are targeted towards public schools which have sex ed but… there’s no such thing as “marriage ed.” Those commercials are ridiculous. And has anyone else besides me noticed that: 1. they used the same book as the prop in all the commercials 2. The commercials are all set in Massachusetts. …think about it.
