Erwin Chemerinsky is in again at UC-Irvine.
In the past three weeks, Chemerinsky was hired, fired and — today — hired again as the founding dean of UC-Irvine’s new law school.
After calling the liberal legal scholar “too politically controversial” and a “lightning rod” UC-Irvine chancellor Michael Drake had a change of heart over the weekend and now says that the new law school will be “founded on the bedrock principle of academic freedom,” according to a press release (.pdf).
Legal Pad wonders whether the universal outrage from legal scholars — liberal and conservative alike — all over the country, politicians and Drake’s own faculty had anything to do with it. Not so says the press release.
“Throughout the past week, we have maintained an open dialogue,” the statement says. “Over the weekend, Chancellor Michael Drake traveled to North Carolina to meet in person and at length with Professor Chemerinsky. Many issues were addressed in depth, including several areas of miscommunication and misunderstanding.” (For more on that, see Drake and Chemerinsky's dueling op-eds in the LA Times last week.)
Aha, just a little misunderstanding. That explains everything.
