It's been only 10 weeks since Scott Schools was appointed interim U.S. attorney for the Northern District of California, so it may be premature to attribute any prosecutorial trends to his leadership. But it's hard not to notice a theme emerging in recent press announcements:
April 24
PROFESSOR CHARGED WITH POSSESSING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
April 19
CREATOR OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY WEBSITE PLEADS GUILTY TO ADVERTISING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND TO TRANSPORTING, AND POSSESSING VISUAL DEPICTIONS OF MINORS ENGAGING IN SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONDUCT
April 11
BAY AREA MAN SENTENCED TO 64 MONTHS IMPRISONMENT FOR TRAVELING TO HAVE SEX WITH A MINOR IN CAMBODIA
Since Schools took over Feb. 15 the office has issued some 42 press releases announcing charges, convictions or sentences on all kinds of crimes, including robbery, gun possession and tax evasion. Of those 42 press releases, eight contained the word "sex" or "porn." That was more than the office had issued over the previous six months.
